Winners of the 2023 Lohmann & Van Sinderen Prizes for Excellence in Undergraduate Printing and Design were announced at an April 27 awards ceremony in the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library.
The entries this year included a diverse range of pieces made for personal, academic, and extracurricular purposes. All of this year’s participants are to be congratulated for the quality, craft, and creativity of their work.
First Prize in the Letterpress category was awarded to Kai Zhang (DC ’26) for their broadside Dinner at Home.
Seojun Lee (PC ’26) also received First Prize for their work (ego) (geo) centrism.
Second Prize was awarded to Maggie Grether (ES ’26) for Poem No.7.
Honorable Mention was awarded to Samuel Ostrove (TC ’25) for An Art of Political Warfare.
First Prize in the Digital Design category was awarded to Kevin Chen (PC ’23) for a body of work.
Michelle Minzhi Li (ES ’23) received Second Prize for Urban Botany—An Essay on Survival.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Emily Cai (PM ’25) for a body of work,
and Matthew Nam (DC ’23) for a body of work.
First Prize for a body of work that contained both letterpress and digital elements was awarded to Cate Roser (BR ’25)
and Honorable Mention for a body of work that contained both letterpress and digital elements was awarded to Gabby Uy (PC ’25).
The judges for this year’s competition were Bill Buccheri; Raleigh D’Adamo SM ’53; John Gambell M.F.A. ’81; Pamela Hovland M.F.A. ’93; Jessie Marsolais; Rebecca Martz; Wynne Patterson M.F.A. ’88; and Jessica Pigza.
Published in October 2022 to commemorate Yale Divinity School’s 200th year, “This Grand Errand” details the School’s history alongside notable achievements of its alumni and faculty. Designed by our own Associate University Printer Rebecca Martz, the book features 165 color illustrations, a foil-stamped cloth cover, and custom endpapers bearing various symbols significant to the School’s history.

Second Prize was awarded to Annli Nakayama (PC ’22) for Printer’s Alphabet.
Honorable Mention was awarded to Cathryn Seibert (JE ’22) for their body of work entry.
Annli Nakayama (PC ’22) was awarded two Honorable Mentions—one for her body of work shown below, and one for her entry Lamb.
First Prize in the Digital Design category was awarded to Daniel Kyungjae Lee (BF ’22) for - 소중한잔: 건배사 모음집 (Sojunghanjan: A Collection of Toasts).
Daniel Kyungjae Lee also received Second Prize for PLAYBOR! WORK AND PLAY.
Honorable Mention was awarded to Joji Baratelli (JE ’24) for Porter and Field Prizes Poster,
Alice Mao (MC ’24) for her body of work Lovers: 1 and 2 and Time Wasting Manifesto,
and Annli Nakayama (PC ’22) for When I Grow Up.
First Prize in the Screen-Based Design category was awarded to Chia Amisola (SY ’22) for Engine.lol: A Browser-Based Gamemaker and Fantasy Console,

Due to the University’s response to Covid-19, this year’s competition was again held entirely online. Categories included Digital Design and Printing, Web/App Design, and a newly created category in Illustration. Judges saw submissions that featured a wide variety of academic, personal, and professional pieces.
All of this year’s participants are to be congratulated on the quality and imagination of their work.
This year’s first prize in the Digital Design and Printing category was awarded to Vera Villanueva (JE ’21) for her body of work. Pictured below are Notes to Self and Oil & Water.
Second prize was awarded to Melissa Leone (GH ’21) for Guide to Navigating Women’s Health, shown below.
Honorable mentions went to Felicia Chang (PM ’21) for Only Observations,

The judging committee of the Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes is pleased to announce that Isaac Morrier ’17 of Branford College has been selected as the winning designer in this year’s poster competition.
We recently visited “The Poet of Them All”: William Shakespeare and Miniature Designer Bindings from the Collection of Neale and Margaret Albert, an exhibition currently on view at the newly renovated Yale Center for British Art. It features nearly one hundred miniature editions of works written or inspired by William Shakespeare, all bound with artistic designer bindings commissioned by Neale Albert J.D. ’61 in the past decade.
