Detail of the book jacket for E.M. Forster’s “The Longest Journey,” designed by Alvin Lustig (1915–1955) and published by New Directions in 1947. One of America’s most influential modern designers, Lustig taught at Yale’s Department of Design from 1951 to 1953, helping to shape its graduate program in graphic design, the first of its kind in the country. In his decade-long relationship with New Directions, Lustig designed dozens of innovative and iconic book jackets, many of which drew inspiration from constructivism, Dada, the Bauhaus, and surrealism.
