From Our Instagram: Walker Evans

November 3, 2015

Walker Evans was born on this day in 1903. One of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, Evans taught at the Yale School of Art from 1964 to 1972, when photography was still part of the school’s graphic design department (a formal graduate program in photography was established in the 1970s). Although best known for his incisive photographs of the American Depression, Evans had a lifelong obsession with signage and vernacular typography. Shown here is a Polaroid of a street arrow and Volkswagen bug that Evans took in 1973–74.
