We are pleased to announce that the exhibition catalog we designed for Treasures from Japan in the Yale University Library, held at the Beinecke Library from January 16 to April 2, 2015, received a 2016 Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab “American Book Prices Current” Exhibition Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS). The Leab Exhibition Awards recognize outstanding printed exhibition catalogs and guides produced by North American and Caribbean institutions. This occasion marks the third time that we’ve received the award since 2012.
According to David Faulds, chair of the awards committee, our catalog demonstrated a strong combination of style and substance. Befitting the subject matter, the text is in English and Japanese and the catalog was designed so that the two texts and images did not compete with one another on the page. The oblong format of the catalog helped present the content clearly while also evoking Japanese book design. Finally, the committee noted the high quality of the images, which brought the subject to life.
The catalog was edited by Daniel V. Botsman, Edward Kamens, Kondō Shigekazu, and Nakamura Haruko. It was designed by Rebecca Martz, our publications specialist.
You can view a PDF of the catalog on the exhibition site and learn about how we designed and printed the catalog in a previous blog post.
