Winners of the 2023 Lohmann & Van Sinderen Prizes for Excellence in Undergraduate Printing and Design were announced at an April 27 awards ceremony in the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library.
The entries this year included a diverse range of pieces made for personal, academic, and extracurricular purposes. All of this year’s participants are to be congratulated for the quality, craft, and creativity of their work.
First Prize in the Letterpress category was awarded to Kai Zhang (DC ’26) for their broadside Dinner at Home.
Seojun Lee (PC ’26) also received First Prize for their work (ego) (geo) centrism.
Second Prize was awarded to Maggie Grether (ES ’26) for Poem No.7.
Honorable Mention was awarded to Samuel Ostrove (TC ’25) for An Art of Political Warfare.
First Prize in the Digital Design category was awarded to Kevin Chen (PC ’23) for a body of work.
Michelle Minzhi Li (ES ’23) received Second Prize for Urban Botany—An Essay on Survival.
Honorable Mentions were awarded to Emily Cai (PM ’25) for a body of work,
and Matthew Nam (DC ’23) for a body of work.
First Prize for a body of work that contained both letterpress and digital elements was awarded to Cate Roser (BR ’25)
and Honorable Mention for a body of work that contained both letterpress and digital elements was awarded to Gabby Uy (PC ’25).
The judges for this year’s competition were Bill Buccheri; Raleigh D’Adamo SM ’53; John Gambell M.F.A. ’81; Pamela Hovland M.F.A. ’93; Jessie Marsolais; Rebecca Martz; Wynne Patterson M.F.A. ’88; and Jessica Pigza.
