Announcing the Winners of the 2016 Lohmann & Van Sinderen Prizes

Winners of the 2016 Lohmann & Van Sinderen Prizes for Excellence in Undergraduate Printing and Design were announced at last Friday’s awards ceremony in the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library.

The more than thirty entries this year included a diverse range of pieces made for personal, academic, and extracurricular purposes. All of this year’s participants are to be congratulated for the quality, craft, and creativity of their work.

This year’s first prize in the digital category was awarded to Mariah Xu ES ’16 for her body of work (pictured above), including three large poster series, two student publications—Dimensions and Kalliopeand a personal portfolio catalog. Oliver Preston JE ’16 was awarded second prize for the Yale Literary Magazine and his broadsheet interpretation of “This is Living,” an essay by Charles D’Ambrosio. Honorable mentions were awarded to Katie Colford CC ’16 for her accordion-style artist’s book, The Playbook, and “Small Worlds” performance poster; Chloe Siamof BK ’16 for her Doors of New Haven zine; and Kai Takahashi BK ’16 for “Meet the Marks,” a collection of pamphlets about punctuation marks.

First prize in the letterpress category was awarded to Julia Ma JE ’19 for her body of work, including a letterpress poster and two artist’s books, entitled Snow Day and Fire Escape. Honorable mentions were awarded to Heather Harrington ES ’19 for her letterpress piece entitled “The Serenity of Solitude” and Juan Pablo Ponce de León JE ’16 for his “Omnibus et Singulis” letterpress certificate.  

The prizes were established in 1967 in honor of Carl C. Lohmann, Class of 1910, founding member of the honorable company of college printers, lifelong typophile, and secretary of the University from 1927 to 1953. Since 2015, they have been supported by the Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prize fund.

The judges for this year’s competition were Molly Dotson, John Gambell, Basie Gitlin, Cindy Hwang, Rebecca Martz, Richard Rose, and Jae Rossman.
