The peculiar weather vane that adorns the steeple of Berkeley College, one of Yale’s twelve residential colleges. It features a cast bronze rendering of the mitre (the ceremonial headdress of a bishop) in recognition of the college’s namesake, the Reverend George Berkeley. He endowed Yale with a gift of land and books in 1733 and was named Bishop of Cloyne in 1734. Berkeley is one of several buildings on campus with a distinctive weather vane.
