One of the preeminent American graphic designers of the 20th century, Thompson was an adjunct professor of graphic design at the Yale School of Art for almost four decades (1956–95). He is perhaps best known for his exuberant designs for “Westvaco Inspirations,” a promotional magazine published by the Westvaco Paper Corporation that reached thousands of designers, printers, and students; he designed more than 60 issues over the course of some 20 years.
