Dan Friedman was born on this day in 1945. An influential designer and educator, Friedman taught graphic design at the Yale School of Art from 1969 to 1973. He was a leading practitioner of New Wave typography, which rejected the International Typographic Style in favor of a more playful and expressive approach to visual language. In his 1994 book “Radical Modernism,” Friedman urged others to “live and work with passion and responsibility; have a sense of humor and fantasy.” Shown here is a poster he designed for the Yale Symphony Orchestra in 1973.
