A decorative stone carving of a lightbulb on the exterior of Sheffield-Sterling-Strathcona Hall, also known as SSS. Built in 1931, SSS was part of Yale’s Sheffield Scientific School, which was established in 1854 and offered undergraduate and postgraduate instruction in applied chemistry and engineering, as well as other sciences. The Sheff School initially operated quite independently, but its programs were gradually absorbed into Yale College and the School of Engineering; in 1956, it ceased to exist as a separate entity.
