The Yale seal on a stained glass window in Sterling Memorial Library, which opened in 1931. The seal, which has been in use since 1736, depicts a book emblazoned with two Hebrew words, “Urim” and “Thummim,” which appear in the Hebrew bible and signified the “light” and “perfection” of Christ to Yale’s early stewards. The phrase was translated into Latin as “Lux et Veritas,” or “Light and Truth,” and remains Yale’s motto to this day. (Photo: Michael Marsland, University Photographer)
