Announcing the Winners of the 2016 Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes

April 1, 2016

Winners of the 2016 Adrian Van Sinderen Book Collecting Prizes have been announced.

Both the senior and sophomore competitions this year had exceptionally strong candidates, and the judges were impressed by the quality of the collections themselves and the presentations made by the collectors. All of this year’s finalists are to be congratulated on their diligence and eloquence.

This year’s senior prize was awarded to Daniel Rubins of Pierson College for his collection titled “Musical Theatre Scores and Libretti: A Practitioner’s Selection” (pictured above). Alexa Little of Morse College was awarded the senior second prize for her collection, “Languages of the World.” Senior honorable mentions were awarded to Annemarie McDaniel of Trumbull College for her collection titled “Insights on Youth: Autographed and Personalized Notes in Modern Novels on Coming-of-Age and Identity,” Jason Parisi of Pierson College for his collection on Chinese theoretical physics, and Cristóbal Trujillo of Saybrook College for his collection on Aztec and Maya philology.

The sophomore prize was awarded to Jack Taperell of Calhoun College (pictured above) for his collection titled “The Theory and Performance of Magic.” Simon Horn of Jonathan Edwards College was awarded the sophomore second prize for his general library, including his collection of Shakespeare’s works. Hopewell Rogers of Davenport College received a sophomore honorable mention for her collection titled “Traumatic Effects of the First World War on Individuals and Societies.”

For more than half a century, student bibliophiles have been receiving prizes for the quality of their book collections, thanks to the generosity of Yale alumnus Adrian Van Sinderen (Class of 1910). In 1957 Mr. Van Sinderen established two prizes, for Yale seniors and sophomores, in order to encourage undergraduates to collect books, build up libraries of their own, and read for pleasure and learning.

In 2002 an annual poster competition was added, awarding a prize to the winning designer of the poster used to announce the book collecting competition. Mariah Xu ’16 of Ezra Stiles College was selected as the winning designer in this year’s poster competition. Franklyn Zhu ’17 of Branford College was awarded an honorable mention.

In 2014 the annual Adrian Van Sinderen Lecture was established. Glen Miranker ’75, collector of Sherlockiana and former chief technology officer at Apple, will deliver this year’s public lecture on April 20 at 4:30 in the Sterling Memorial Library lecture hall.

Judges for this year’s competition were Elisabeth Fairman (Acting Chair), Joseph Agostini ’93, Eve Houghton ’17, Rebecca Martz, Miko McGinty ’93, Stephen Parks ’61, William Reese ’77, E.C. Schroeder, and Sylvia Van Sinderen.
